Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing

At Heart Space Counseling Center, we know from experience that truly healing from trauma is actually possible

and should not take a lifetime. Decades of research continue to demonstrate that talking about what happened to you only gets you so far. Exposure therapy models like EMDR can take you the distance by processing trauma at a cellular and neurobiological level.

What is EMDR?

Updating Old Files in Your Mental & Emotional Operating System

If you’ve been struggling with trauma, anxiety, painful memories, or just a sense that something is "stuck," EMDR therapy might be the breakthrough you’ve been waiting for. EMDR is a powerful, research-based therapy designed to help you process and heal from disturbing experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (like eye movements, sounds, or tapping) to activate your brain’s natural healing processes, similar to what happens during REM sleep.

What to Expect in EMDR

EMDR is an eight phase process beginning with building a strong foundation of safety and trust with your therapist. Once you're ready, your therapist will guide you through the process of desensitizing traumatic memories through your brain’s own healing mechanisms. Many clients report feeling emotional relief even after just a few sessions.

Phase 1:
History Taking & Treatment Planning

You and your therapist explore your story, symptoms, and goals to create a personalized treatment roadmap.

Phase 2:
Preparation

You learn skills and support strategies and build trust so you’re ready to engage in reprocessing work.

Phase 3:
Assessment

A specific target memory is identified and linked with the thoughts, feelings, and body sensations you want to address.

Phase 4:
Desensitization

Through bilateral stimulation, distress around the target memory decreases as your system processes it toward resolution.

Phase 5:
Installation

Negative beliefs about yourself are replaced with positive beliefs that are strengthened and integrated into the memory.

Phase 6:
Body Scan

You check your body for residual tension and process any lingering physical sensations related to the traumatic memory.

Phase 7:
Closure

Each session ends with grounding and stabilization so you leave feeling calm and regulated.

Phase 8:
Re-Evaluation

At the start of a new session, your therapist checks progress and adjusts the plan as needed before moving forward.

Integration & Ongoing Care

Gains are reinforced through future-oriented rehearsal, helping you apply new beliefs & skills to real-life situations to support lasting change.
